Tumbled stones are some of the most versatile crystals you can own. They sit on your desk, live in your pocket, get tucked under your pillow, placed on your body during meditation, or arranged around your home. All of that means they're constantly absorbing energy, yours and everything around them.
Cleansing them regularly keeps their energy clear and their vibration strong. Here's how. ✨
Full moon cleansing
The full moon is the most loved cleansing method for good reason. It's gentle enough for every crystal, requires zero effort, and there's something genuinely magical about collecting your stones in the morning knowing they've been sitting under that light all night.
Arrange your tumbled stones on a windowsill or outside on the night of the full moon. Leave them overnight. Come morning they're cleansed and recharged, ready to go.
If you have a large collection, this is by far the easiest way to cleanse everything at once. One night a month and you're done.
Sage or palo santo smoke
Light your sage or palo santo and let it smoke. Pass each stone slowly through the smoke, turning it as you go so every surface is covered. Hold a simple intention as you do it: clearing away whatever the stone has absorbed and returning it to its natural state.
This one is particularly good for stones that have been through a lot. If you've been using a crystal for heavy emotional work or it's been sitting in a space with difficult energy, smoke cleansing gives you that clear, decisive reset.
Selenite
Selenite is one of the rare crystals that cleanses others, which makes it one of the most practical things to have if you own a collection. Place your tumbled stones on a selenite plate or slab and leave them for a few hours or overnight.
This is the method that works best as a daily or weekly habit rather than a once-a-month ritual. If you keep your tumbled stones on a selenite plate when you're not using them, they stay consistently clear without you having to think about it much.
Sound cleansing
Sound is a beautiful and underrated cleansing method, especially for larger collections. A singing bowl, a tuning fork, or even a bell works. The vibration moves through the stones and clears stagnant energy.
Place your tumbled stones in or near the singing bowl and let the sound wash over them for a minute or two. This one is also a lovely ritual in itself, the kind that slows you down and makes you feel like you've properly pressed reset.
Running water
Hold your tumbled stones under cool running water for 30 to 60 seconds, visualising the water carrying away any heavy or stagnant energy.
This works beautifully for water-safe crystals, but not all tumbled stones are safe to get wet. Avoid water for selenite, lepidolite, malachite, pyrite, and calcite as these can dissolve, rust, or be damaged.
Water-safe tumbled stones include rose quartz, amethyst, clear quartz, obsidian, tiger's eye, labradorite, aventurine, carnelian, and lapis lazuli.
Burying in the earth
For a deep, slow reset, bury your tumbled stones in soil for 24 to 48 hours. The earth absorbs dense energy and grounds the stone completely. This is particularly good for crystals that have been carrying a lot, or ones you feel need more than a surface cleanse.
Just mark where you've buried them so you can find them again. Wrap them in a cloth if you want to protect them from moisture.
How often should you cleanse tumbled stones?
It depends on how you're using them. Stones you carry daily or use in active energy work benefit from a monthly cleanse at minimum. Stones sitting quietly on a shelf can go longer between cleansings.
A simple way to know: if a stone starts to feel heavier, duller, or just a bit off, cleanse it. You'll develop a feel for this over time and it becomes intuitive pretty quickly.
Setting an intention after cleansing
Once your stones are cleansed, take a moment to hold them and set a fresh intention. Think about what you want each stone to support or what energy you want to invite in. It takes less than a minute and makes a real difference to how they feel to work with.

Frequently asked questions
How do I cleanse tumbled stones for the first time? Give any new crystal a cleanse before you start working with it. Full moon, sage smoke, or a selenite plate all work well for a first cleanse. Then hold it and set your intention before you start using it.
Can all tumbled stones be cleansed with water? No. Rose quartz, amethyst, clear quartz, obsidian, tiger's eye, labradorite, aventurine, carnelian, and lapis lazuli are all water-safe. Selenite, lepidolite, malachite, pyrite, and calcite should not be put in water. When in doubt, use moonlight or smoke.
How long does it take to cleanse a tumbled stone? It depends on the method. Smoke cleansing takes a minute or two per stone. Running water takes 30 to 60 seconds. Selenite and moonlight work overnight. Sound cleansing takes a couple of minutes for a whole collection. None of them are time-consuming.
Can I cleanse tumbled stones in sunlight? You can, but with caution. Sunlight is energising and can charge certain crystals beautifully. However some stones fade in direct sunlight over time, particularly amethyst, rose quartz, and fluorite. A short time in morning sun is generally fine, but avoid leaving them out for hours in strong sunlight.
Do tumbled stones need to be cleansed differently to raw crystals? The methods are the same. The main difference is that tumbled stones are polished and sealed, which makes them slightly more resilient to methods like water. Raw crystals can be more porous so water cleansing requires a little more caution. Otherwise full moon, smoke, selenite, and sound all work equally well for both.
